Eat Well, Eat Cheap!

Hey Foodsters!

People of Mumbai cut across barriers of different caste, class, gender and ethnicity but one thing we all have in common is our passion for cheap food. Let’s face it we’re all cheap! Street food is one of the characteristics of Mumbai but with the new ‘being health conscious’ trend, many mumbaikars are concerned about their diet and try to avoid street food. So let’s get this straight! We want to spend less and at the same time eat healthy, Aaah! The Dilemma! #firstworldproblems
So for those who are going through this phase, I’ve come up with a list of 5 reasonably priced restaurants where the food is in no way compromised that I would personally recommend.

1. New Martin Hotel
This is a small eatery situated in one of lanes of Colaba. If you love Goan food & are in town, Martin’s the place. While the ambience is very basic, service is fast and the food is just over the top. It’s an ideal pick for a quick meal and is very easy on your pocket.

Must Try: Steak Onion Chips, Prawn Pulav, Beef Chilly Fry, Fish Curry Rice and Pork Vindaloo.

Cost: Rs 300 for 2 people

Where: 21, Glamour House, Strand Road, Near Strand Cinema, Colaba, Mumbai.

2.  King Chilli
There are Chinese restaurants, there are restaurants that serve Chinese food, there are even restaurants that decorate themselves with Chinese motifs and then there is King Chilli. This is a fantastic place in kalina, good service, good quality and quantity. Each item is distinctly different from the other; it’s just one of those rare places where you get Chinese food without the Indian flavors dominating.

Must Try: Black Pepper Chicken, Pot Rice, King Chilli Special Soup, Burnt Garlic Rice and Kung-Poo Prawns.

Cost: Rs 400 for 2 people

Where: 2, 132, Gwen’s Apartment, Kalina Kurla Road, Kalina, Santacruz East, Mumbai.

3. Jai Hind Lunch Home
Craving for some good malwani food? Then Jai Hind is your pick. This is an excellent place wherein you cannot go wrong with seafood. The food is delicious, the service is great, and as a requirement to be on this list, it’s affordable.
Must Try: Butter Pepper Garlic Prawns, Prawn Koliwada, Puli Munchi Ravas with neer dosa and fish curry rice

Cost:  500 for 2 people

Where: 7/8 B, Madhav Bhavan, Opposite Kamala Mills, Lower Parel, Mumbai.

4. IMBISS
If you are roaming around in Bandra after a long day of shopping, drop in at IMBISS for some good German style meat. It is a bit difficult to locate and when you reach here, it is as difficult to get a table but the ambiance is brilliant. At the end, it is the food that matters and the food here takes over all the possible negative points. This just might be that perfect place to go if you are a hardcore non-veg eater, starving and broke.

Must Try: Beef Bugger, Smoked Pork with Fat and Rind, sausage platter, Chorizo rice

Cost: 600 for two people

Where: 14, Ben O Lil Haven, Waroda Road, Off Hill Road, Bandra West, Mumbai

5.Spirit
Spirit is located on the main road of the Andheri-Kurla Road. The ambience is hip; it has a bright and colorful decor with dim lighting and good music. Overall, it is nice, comfortable and lively. They also serve alcohol and the prices are pocket friendly. The service is prompt and not only is the Mughlai food mouth watering but it also goes really well with the alcohol served.

Must Try: Cheese Kebabs, Kakori Kebabs, Chicken Biryani and Mutton Masala

Cost: 650 for 2 people with alcohol

Where: A.K Road, Marol Bazaar, JB Nagar, Andheri East, Mumbai.
